Guest Speaker YouthYouth, Living Creatively talk on 23rd March 2017.
I began planning for Youth’s talk at Newton Park campus back in January.
We communicated via email and he had passed on a biography about himself for me to use as a starting point for ideas for the talk.
I approached the Student Union in February who were very helpful and able to give details of the person I would need to contact to book the Student’s Union bar for the talk.
I was also networking during a Student Union pre election meeting in Locksbrook Road and met a student from Newton Park called Liam Macauley who works on the Bath Spa television channel and was happy to video the event for me.
One thing I would do differently is the publicity. I put posters up and got messages out via the Student Union news updates, however, I feel that many did not realise the calibre of guest speaker and had they known about his long and successful career as a music producer, writer, artist and bass player with Killing Joke, there may have been more interest from students. Perhaps people doubted that I would actually ‘pull this off’!
The talk itself went very well, both myself and Youth enjoyed the day and he commented that he liked my approach. It is also one of the most nerve wracking things I have ever done, due to my bi-polar and having issues with anxiety, especially with public speaking.
I relished the challenge and have had good feedback from both Youth and from a member of staff who attended the event.
